Chennai Airport Runway Flooded, Resulting in Grounding of Planes

Heavy rain due to cyclone Michaung has caused severe waterlogging in Chennai, leading to the closure of schools, colleges, and government offices. Videos circulating online show flooded roads and submerged cars. The Chennai airport has also suspended operations, with multiple flights being cancelled or diverted.

As rainwater entered the airport runway, authorities made the decision to close the airport until 11 pm tonight. The closure has resulted in the cancellation of 12 domestic outbound flights and four international flights. Additionally, three incoming international flights were diverted to Bengaluru due to the adverse weather conditions.

The heavy rain has caused power outages and internet disruptions in several areas of Chennai. As a result, officials have declared a public holiday in the city. The state government has also advised private companies to allow their employees to work from home.

In addition to Chennai, five southern Odisha districts – Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam – have been placed on alert in anticipation of the cyclone. The approaching cyclone Michaung is expected to hit the North coast of Tamil Nadu before heading towards Andhra Pradesh.

The images and videos of the flooded Chennai airport have been widely shared on social media, highlighting the extent of the waterlogging. The closure of the airport and the cancellation of flights have inconvenienced many travelers. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to mitigate the effects of the heavy rain and cyclone.
