Disney Acquires Epic Games Shares for .5 Billion, Collaborates with Fortnite

The Walt Disney Company is venturing into a new universe that will interact with Fortnite. This new universe is set to provide consumers with an array of options to engage with characters and narratives from popular universes such as Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.

Disney has recently publicized its acquisition of a $1.5 billion equity stake in Epic Games. This strategic partnership aims to usher in an entirely new gaming and entertainment universe that is connected to Fortnite. This new feature is expected to substantially extend the scope of Disney’s stories and interactive experiences. Furthermore, it will provide consumers with various ways to play, watch, shop and interact with content, characters and stories from their favorite universes. Users will also be able to create and share their personal stories and experiences, thereby allowing them to express their fandom in a distinctly Disney way.

Robert A. Iger, the CEO of the Walt Disney Company, expressed his enthusiasm about this novel partnership. He said, “Our new relationship with Epic Games will unite Disney’s most cherished brands and franchises with the extremely popular Fortnite, thereby creating a fresh universe of games and entertainment. This agreement is Disney’s most significant investment in video games to date, and it offers immense growth opportunities. We eagerly anticipate our fans experiencing the Disney stories and worlds they adore in entirely new and innovative ways.”

Tim Sweeney, the founder and CEO of Epic Games, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. He said, “Disney was one of the first companies to recognize the potential of merging their worlds with ours in Fortnite. They also use Unreal Engine across their portfolio. Now, we are collaborating on something entirely new to construct a persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem that will unite the Disney and Fortnite communities.” Josh D’Amaro, the president of Disney Experiences, added, “This collaboration will enable us to amalgamate our incredible collection of stories and experiences from across the company for wide audiences in ways we could only fantasize about before. The industry-leading technology of Epic Games and Fortnite’s open ecosystem will aid us in reaching consumers wherever they are, so they can interact with Disney in the ways that are most relevant to them.”
