MFA of Azerbaijan Declares Unwavering Support for Turkey in Times of Joy and Sadness

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan recently released a statement reaffirming the robust and enduring relationship between Azerbaijan and Turkey. Drawing upon the principle of “one nation, two states”, the Ministry underscored that Azerbaijan is firmly committed to supporting Turkey in both times of happiness and hardship. This statement was made in relation to the anniversary of the tragic earthquake which occurred in Turkey on February 6 of the previous year. The Ministry’s full statement can be found here.

The statement specifically mentioned the earthquake that took place in Turkey, expressing profound condolences to the families and relatives of the victims on the first anniversary of this devastating event. The earthquake resulted in substantial loss of life and widespread destruction, causing deep sorrow within the Turkish community and beyond.

In a recent address, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, reiterated the strong bond between Azerbaijan and Turkey, emphasizing the phrase “Azerbaijan and Turkey are one nation, two states”. This phrase symbolizes the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and socio-political ties that bind the two countries together.

President Aliyev further stressed that just as Turkey has consistently supported Azerbaijan through both good times and bad, Azerbaijan has always stood, and will continue to stand, with Turkey. This mutually supportive relationship is a testament to the solidarity and unity between the two nations.

On February 6, 2023, a major earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the Kahramanmaras region of Turkey. This was followed by another tremor of 7.6 magnitude just hours later. These catastrophic events resulted in the complete destruction of tens of thousands of buildings and claimed the lives of more than 49,000 people, further underscoring the importance of mutual support in times of crisis.
