South Korea Launches Campaign to Combat Bedbug Infestation
New Delhi: South Korea is facing a surge in bedbug outbreaks as the country experiences a post-pandemic tourism boom. Locals are now avoiding public transport and cinemas to protect themselves from these bloodsucking pests. In response, hygiene authorities are urging international travelers, especially those from regions like France and Britain where bedbug outbreaks have been reported, to thoroughly disinfect their belongings. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has issued a statement advising travelers who may have been exposed to bedbugs while abroad to sterilize their travel accessories.
Concerns about the spread of bedbugs to other locations have led to increased vigilance. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to curb the infestation amidst the rise in travel activity.
To address the bedbug crisis, the South Korean government has launched a comprehensive four-week campaign. This includes inspections and pest control measures at “vulnerable” public facilities such as bathhouses, dormitories, and child care facilities. Immediate disinfection protocols are being implemented in suspected locations. However, the People Power Party has expressed reservations about disclosing the specific areas affected by bedbugs due to concerns about potential “secondary damage.” The party is currently reviewing the decision to reveal these locations.
According to Reuters, South Korea has confirmed 30 cases of bedbugs as of Tuesday, November 7, with more than half of them reported in Seoul. The country had successfully eradicated bedbugs in the 1960s but is now allocating £312 million (approximately Rs 2 Cr) and forming a special team to tackle the issue. Authorities expect the number of reported cases to increase and are urging people not to be embarrassed about reporting sightings.
A government official mentioned that there is an expectation for an increase in reported cases of bedbugs in the future. Some individuals refrain from reporting due to concerns about being associated with poor hygiene. However, the official emphasized that the number of reports is expected to rise and encouraged people to come forward.
