Supreme Court Takes Action on Delhi’s Air Pollution Crisis

The Supreme Court expressed its concern and issued strong remarks regarding the severe air pollution in Delhi, emphasizing the need for urgent action. Here are the key remarks made by the court:

1. The court criticized the political differences that hinder a proper resolution to the problem, stating, “This cannot be turned into a political battle. It is a threat to people’s health.”

2. The court directed state governments to take immediate measures to prevent stubble burning, urging them to find a solution and stating, “We want it to stop. We don’t know how you will do it, but it is your responsibility. Something needs to be done immediately.”

3. Delhi government was also held accountable by the court, highlighting the issue of pollution caused by buses running at half capacity. The court stated, “Delhi government must also take responsibility and address this problem.”

4. The court criticized the effectiveness of the odd-even vehicle scheme implemented by the Delhi government to combat pollution. It referred to such schemes as “mere optics,” suggesting that they are not substantial enough to address the issue.

5. The court questioned the feasibility of continuing paddy cultivation in Punjab, as it is causing damage to the state’s water table. It stated, “The crop is depleting the water table of the state.”

The Supreme Court’s remarks underscore the urgent need for immediate action to tackle the hazardous air quality in Delhi.
