Tens of Thousands Protest Against Extreme Right in Hamburg

In a powerful display of solidarity against far-right ideologies, tens of thousands of people participated in a march through the city center in Hamburg on Sunday. The event’s organizers estimate that the number of activists exceeded 50,000, although the official count from the police is yet to be reported.

This event marked the third time this year that Hamburg has seen demonstrations against the extreme right. Similar marches have been regularly organized in various other German cities over the past few months, reflecting a growing trend of public opposition against such ideologies.

In addition to Hamburg, protests were also slated to take place in a dozen cities on Sunday. Demonstrators in the thousands were reported in Berlin, Dresden, Zwisckau, Bautzen, Görlitz, and Meissen, reflecting the widespread nature of these demonstrations.

These protests are a direct response to a controversial meeting held in Potsdam last November. This meeting, involving AfD politicians and neo-Nazis, is said to have discussed the “remigration” and subsequent deportation of migrants and minorities. Notably, the meeting also included members from the Christian Democrats of CDU, the party of the former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is now in opposition.
