Fresh Challenge for Uttarakhand Rescue Operations as Freezing Temperatures and Rain Set In

Rescue efforts to free 41 construction workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi are facing fresh challenges due to freezing temperatures and rain. The weather office has predicted snowfall in areas above 4,000 meters, adding to the difficulties faced by rescue teams. The workers have been trapped in the tunnel for over 16 days and are now facing an extended wait for their rescue, possibly stretching for days or even weeks. Concerns are rising about their health and well-being, with doctors emphasizing the need for comprehensive rehabilitation due to the prolonged confinement. Despite the adverse weather conditions, rescue officials remain confident in their ability to handle the situation. The vertical drilling process, which began recently, is expected to be completed by Thursday, assuming no unforeseen obstacles arise. Manual drilling will then commence to create an escape route for the workers. Micro tunneling expert Chris Cooper has confirmed the removal of debris from the auger machine and stated that manual drilling will start in a few hours. The last part of the tunnel will require breaking through with hand-held power tools, a process that will take more time. However, the Army is supervising the operation and progress has been made with 30 meters of vertical drilling already completed.
