Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the achievements of India during its G20 presidency, stating that the country revitalized multilateralism, amplified the voice of the Global South, championed development, and fought for women’s empowerment. As Brazil prepares to take over the presidency from December 1, PM Modi expressed confidence that India’s efforts will have a lasting impact.

In an opinion piece published in several newspapers, PM Modi described India’s approach as “inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive.” He emphasized that the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, unanimously adopted by all G20 members, reflects the commitment to these principles.

PM Modi noted that during India’s chairmanship, the world faced numerous challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate threats, financial instability, and debt distress in developing nations. He highlighted the importance of reflecting, recommitting, and rejuvenating the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – “One Earth, One Family, One Future” – as India passes the baton to Brazil.

India aimed to offer an alternative to the status quo and shift from GDP-centric to human-centric progress. The “Voice of the Global South Summit,” convened by India, heralded a new era of multilateralism where developing countries play a significant role in shaping the global narrative.

PM Modi also emphasized India’s domestic inclusivity in its G20 presidency, making it a “People’s Presidency” that reflects the values of the world’s largest democracy. India delivered the G20 2023 Action Plan to Accelerate Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on interconnected issues such as health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.

The robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) played a crucial role in this progress. Through the G20, India completed the Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, which will facilitate global technological collaboration and inclusive growth.

The G20 leaders’ declaration highlighted the commitment to climate justice and equity, recognizing the need for substantial financial and technological support from developed nations. It acknowledged the monumental resources required for developing countries to fulfill their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2030.

PM Modi also emphasized India’s leading role in UN reforms, particularly in the restructuring of principal organs like the UN Security Council, to ensure a more equitable global order. Gender equality was given priority, leading to the formation of a dedicated Working Group on the Empowerment of Women.

India also led discussions on geopolitical issues and their impact on economic growth and development during its G20 presidency. PM Modi stressed the importance of addressing terrorism and the senseless killing of civilians with a policy of zero tolerance, promoting humanitarianism over hostility.

India’s Women’s Reservation Bill 2023, which reserves one-third of parliamentary and state legislative assembly seats for women, exemplifies the country’s commitment to women-led development.

Overall, India’s G20 presidency has left a significant impact on multilateralism, development, and women’s empowerment, and PM Modi expressed confidence that these achievements will resonate for years to come.
