People in Chennai and its suburbs are still facing difficulties with stagnant water and power outages after heavy rain caused severe waterlogging in the Tamil Nadu capital. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been involved in relief operations, using Chetak helicopters to drop supplies in different areas of Chennai. Videos on social media show people stranded on rooftops while the IAF helicopters deliver bags of food and medical supplies. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has been dropping supplies in Cholavaram, located 24 km north of the capital. As a precautionary measure, power supply has been temporarily halted in certain areas due to the risks associated with submerged cables. Additionally, schools and colleges in Chennai have been declared closed tomorrow.
The relentless rain brought on by Cyclone Michuang has caused flooding in neighborhoods like Velachery and Tambaram. Residents have been forced to abandon their flooded homes, carrying their children and wading through stagnant water to seek refuge on higher ground. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has visited the flood-affected areas and distributed food and supplies at a relief camp in the city.
DMK MP TR Baalu, speaking during Zero Hour in Parliament, has demanded that the floods be declared a national calamity and has sought assistance from the central government to mitigate the situation. He emphasized the heavy damage to properties and the loss of more than 17 lives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for those affected by Cyclone Michaung, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. He assured that authorities are working tirelessly to assist those affected and will continue their efforts until the situation normalizes.
Cyclone Michaung made landfall between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm yesterday, with Chennai and its surrounding areas being heavily impacted by the storm.
