AFA Announces Buenos Aires will Host 2024 Libertadores Final

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced on Tuesday, through its social media channels, that Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, will be the host for the final match of the prestigious Libertadores Cup this year. However, they did not mention which stadium would be hosting the match. The expectation is that it would take place at the Monumental de Núñez, the home ground of the renowned River Plate football club.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), which is the main organizer of the tournament, has not yet given any official statement regarding this. However, it is expected that they will make an announcement soon. AFA announced on the former Twitter platform, “It’s official: Buenos Aires will host the 2024 Copa Libertadores final. What a joy to welcome you to our country, Conmebol!”

According to the information provided by Conmebol, the decision for the Libertadores Cup is scheduled to be made on November 30th this year. River Plate’s home ground, the Monumental de Núñez, is considered a strong contender for hosting the final game. With its recently upgraded facilities and a seating capacity of 82,000 spectators, it is the largest stadium in South America.

This will mark the first time that Argentina will have the privilege of hosting the Libertadores final since the introduction of the single venue final format. Argentina has previously hosted the South American final on two occasions, in the years 2020 and 2022.

Prior to this, the cities that have been chosen to host the Libertadores final include Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (in 2023 and 2020), Guayaquil in Ecuador (in 2022), Montevideo in Uruguay (in 2021), and Lima in Peru (in 2019).

Conmebol announced that they have allocated a sum of R$1.5 billion as prize money for clubs participating in the men’s and women’s tournaments for the current season. This is a significant increase from last year’s prize pool, which totaled R$ 1.4 billion. However, the confederation has not provided a breakdown of the amount that will be paid for each competition.

It is important to note that the aforementioned amount does not include the prize pool for the Copa América, the tournament between national teams that will be held between June and July in the United States. The president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, expressed in a statement that the organization is dedicated to improving the competitiveness of regional football competitions.
