The International Court of Justice, situated in The Hague, continues to undertake proceedings, examining the legality of Israel’s control over Palestinian territories. The core of these hearings revolves around the issue of whether the actions undertaken by Israel in the Gaza Strip can be classified as criminal.
In light of these discussions, US Representative, Richard Visek, made a crucial point. He emphasized that those advocating for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from these territories must also consider Israel’s security concerns. Additionally, he threw light on the efforts of the United States in striving towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He expressed hope that these efforts would eventually culminate in the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
The Egyptian representative, Yasmine Moussa, expressed her astonishment at the opposition from certain states to the court’s decision-making process. She further questioned the implications this has on their stance towards international law, asking, “What does this say about their attitude to international law?”.
The representative from the United Arab Emirates also voiced her concerns regarding the matter. She stated that the violation of laws by the Israeli side is acting as a roadblock to the potential settlement and eventual creation of a Palestinian state. She further expressed her criticism of the United Nations Security Council’s inability to pass a resolution calling for an end to the ongoing hostilities.
