L’Île-Tudy Surprised and Flattered by its Selection as “French Favorite Village”

Mayor Éric Jousseaume of Île-Tudy was surprised to learn from France 3 a month and a half ago that his small town was being considered for the “French favorite village” competition, presented by Stéphane Bern. The selection for this Breton region was unexpected, especially considering strong competitors like Collioure, Gassin or Thomery. However, the show’s jury unanimously selected Île-Tudy, a decision that brought immense joy to the municipal team and the residents of this village, which has a population of 754 in winter and swells to more than 8,000 in summer.

Mayor Jousseaume believes this recognition could shed light on the Bigouden region, an area often overlooked outside of the summer season. Despite its small size, the town has a vibrant community spirit, with a local school and active associations contributing to its charm.

Île-Tudy, a small peninsula of 126 hectares since 1852, is full of history and charm. Initially, it was home to a few fishermen’s houses, whose residents had to row to the mainland to sell their catch. Over the years, it became a sardine town with several canneries, although now only picturesque fishermen’s houses remain. The village has managed to preserve itself from urbanization, attracting visitors with its typical streets, small marina, and kilometers of sandy beach.

“People are welcome if they are respectful”

When the selection was announced, there was some concern among locals about the potential influx of tourists disrupting parking and traffic. However, Mayor Jousseaume reassures that the village is well-prepared. Measures have been taken over the years to ensure tourist activity is less disruptive, including promoting gentle travel, providing parking outside the city center, and closing the parking bay. The village has a hotel and three campsites to accommodate visitors, and second homes make up 60% of the residences in the town. The mayor emphasizes that visitors are always welcome, as long as they respect the town’s heritage.

Mayor Jousseaume concludes by reminding that Île-Tudy has not yet won the competition. He jokes that they will know the results when they see Stéphane Bern in their town. Voting is open until March 8 at 11:59 p.m. Brittany has already won the competition in 2015 and 2016 with Rochefort-en-Terre and Ploumanac’h.
