DJI Unveils Osmo Pocket 3 and Mic 2, Perfect for Content Creators

It is a common aspiration among the youth to become successful content creators. A recent study titled ‘Future of Creativity’, conducted by Adobe, has revealed that over a third of Spain’s population, accounting for approximately 17 million individuals, are engaged in creating videos or uploading photographs on social media platforms on a regular basis. While some pursue it as a professional endeavor, others consider it a recreational activity or a hobby. In such a scenario, the provision of basic tools essential for content creation can potentially open up a new and lucrative market for brands. This is an opportunity that DJI is keen to capitalize on.

Having already made a significant impact in the drone market, DJI is now looking to expand its footprint in this emerging market. The brand’s efforts are centered around its latest products, the Osmo Pocket 3 camera, which was unveiled in Spain in October, and the DJI Mic 2 microphone, which was launched in January 2024. Available for 679 euros, the package includes the camera, microphone, battery grip, and mini tripod, offering a comprehensive solution to meet all video-related requirements of content creators. We have had the opportunity to try these products and here’s what we thought of our experience.

However, it’s worth noting that DJI is facing stiff competition in this field. It has two major competitors: GoPro, which has a stronghold on the action camera market with products similar in features and size, and the ubiquitous smartphone. The latter is particularly relevant as it is the primary tool for most amateur content creators. Therefore, convincing individuals who own high-end smartphones to invest in an additional device would require DJI’s products to offer exceptional value.

Despite the competition, the Osmo Pocket 3 camera, currently priced at 329 euros, has certain advantages. It provides superior video quality, with a resolution of up to 4K and 120 frames per second, made possible by its powerful 1-inch CMOS sensor. This is a significant improvement over the video quality that most smartphones in this price range offer. Additionally, the Osmo Pocket 3 has a three-axis mechanical stabilization feature, which is a game-changer in a small gimbal. Its quick focus and ActiveTrack 6.0 features, which offer multiple tracking modes, ensure breathtaking shots.

One aspect of the Osmo Pocket 3 that we particularly liked is its support and 2-inch screen, which can be easily rotated to preview horizontal and vertical shots perfectly. The touchscreen interface allows for easy navigation through its intuitive menu and simple configuration of various functions with just a few taps. The device’s user-friendly operation is undoubtedly one of its strongest points. Its pre-set creative modes and features, such as SpinShot and Motionlapse, are designed to help users achieve eye-catching effects that are sure to be a hit on social media.

Finally, the Osmo Pocket 3 comes with a built-in 1,300 mAh battery that provides just under two hours of 4K/60 fps footage. While this might not be sufficient for long recording sessions, the issue can be resolved by using an additional battery or resorting to fast charging, which can charge the battery up to 80% in 16 minutes and fully charge it in 32 minutes.

THE MIC 2, A PERFECT COMPLEMENT

The DJI Mic 2, with its 1.1-inch OLED touch screen, is the perfect companion to the Osmo 3. It offers omnidirectional recording capabilities that are optimized for vocal quality and features ANC technology, which reduces ambient noise to ensure clear, uninterrupted audio recordings. The quality of the audio, particularly when the windscreen is used, is truly impressive. The ability to connect it to a mobile phone or professional video camera via cable or Bluetooth enhances its versatility.

Another noteworthy feature of the DJI Mic 2 is its clip-on design, which simplifies the process of attaching it to clothing. Each transmitter comes with 8GB of internal memory, enabling it to provide up to 14 hours of uncompressed audio recording at 48 kHz and 24 bit. The transmitters have a battery life of six hours, which can be extended to 18 hours with the charging case included in the more premium version. This version also comes with a highly practical case.

Furthermore, the DJI Mic 2 boasts a maximum audio transmission range of up to 250 meters, which allows it to be used in shots with significant zoom, offering greater flexibility when recording content with high-quality sound. While there are other similar products in the market, the quality and the DJI brand name could be a major selling point for this product.

To sum it up, these two products are DJI’s latest attempt to expand its market beyond drones. Backed by a reputable brand, these products do not disappoint in terms of performance and design, featuring top-notch materials and a seamless construction. However, the challenge lies in convincing the majority of ordinary users, who make up a large portion of Spain’s 17 million amateur content creators, to leverage all of its features and add a gimbal to their mobile phone. For the time being, using a mobile phone remains the most attractive – and cost-effective – option for them.
