England head coach Matthew Mott expressed his disappointment after England’s 100-run loss to India in the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Mott acknowledged that they anticipated a tough match against India and believed that their bowling and fielding efforts were the best in the tournament so far.
Mott mentioned that they approached their batting innings with a positive mindset, believing that the target set by India was achievable. However, he admitted that losing four wickets for just ten runs put them under immense pressure and the chase unraveled from there.
When questioned about England’s shortcomings in the ongoing tournament, Mott attributed it to their batting, highlighting the fact that they have consistently been bowled out before completing their allotted 50 overs.
Mott emphasized that he never bought into the notion of being defending champions, as every team starts with the same chance. He acknowledged the competitiveness of the other teams and the challenging conditions, expressing disappointment in how things have unfolded for England. However, he remains optimistic about their remaining matches in the tournament.
In the match against India, England chose to bowl first after winning the toss. India managed to score 229/9 in their 50 overs, with Rohit Sharma leading the way with a resilient knock of 87 runs. David Willey was the standout bowler for England, taking three wickets.
In their run chase, England struggled to make an impact, with Liam Livingstone being the only batsman to cross the 20-run mark. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the English batting lineup, taking four and three wickets respectively. India’s victory propelled them to the top of the table with six wins in six matches, while England remained at the bottom with one win and five losses in six matches.
Rohit Sharma was awarded the Player of the Match for his impressive innings.
