Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger has warned that if former President Donald Trump wins a second term, he will select a subservient candidate as attorney general. Kinzinger shared his thoughts on The Bulwark podcast, stating that Trump wants someone who will do his bidding at the Department of Justice (DOJ). Kinzinger emphasized the need to take Trump’s bid for a second term seriously, despite some people scoffing at the idea. He believes that Trump would interview 100 candidates for the attorney general position and choose the one who is willing to prioritize Trump’s interests over the Constitution. Kinzinger expressed concern that such a person in the role of attorney general could significantly stress the system.
Kinzinger’s remarks come as he continues to be a vocal critic of Trump. He highlighted how Trump and his supporters have become more aware of vulnerabilities within the electoral system following their attempts to challenge President Joe Biden’s 2020 win. Trump not only contested the election results in key states like Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania but also pressured his vice president, Mike Pence, to overturn the outcome, without success.
During his presidency, Trump clashed with both of his confirmed US attorneys general. He criticized Jeff Sessions, a former ally, for recusing himself from the Russia investigation, and he also criticized William Barr for rejecting his baseless claims of election fraud in 2020. Sessions served as attorney general from February 2017 until November 2018, while Barr succeeded him and held the position until December 2020.
Kinzinger’s remarks shed light on his concerns about the potential impact of a second Trump term on the Department of Justice and the overall functioning of the American system.
