Luxury fashion brand Dior is facing backlash online after reports surfaced that it has replaced Bella Hadid, a Palestinian-American model and long-time brand ambassador, with Israeli model May Tager in its latest ad campaign. This news quickly led to the trending hashtag “Boycott Dior” on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), with users expressing their discontent. The controversy comes in the wake of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, where Jerusalem claimed over 1,400 casualties and Israel retaliated by launching a major offensive on Hamas-controlled Gaza.
The controversy began when Turkiye’s Yeni Safak reported the news, which was then picked up by a local Israeli newspaper. This sparked a debate among social media users who voiced their concerns about Dior’s decision to replace Hadid. The supermodel has been known for her vocal support of the Palestinian cause and criticism of Israeli policies and has been associated with Dior since 2016. However, neither Hadid nor the brand has commented on the alleged replacement thus far.
On the other hand, May Tager, the 24-year-old Israeli model, has an impressive resume with international brands like Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, and Victoria’s Secret. According to Ynet News, Tager grew up in the Israeli town of Ganei Tikva after her parents moved there from Denmark. Some posts on her Instagram last week seemed to indicate that she is the star of Dior’s new holiday campaign ad.
Social media users on X criticized Dior for its association with Johnny Depp, who has recently faced controversy. Some users expressed their disappointment and stated that this decision would make them reconsider their luxury purchases. One user commented, “The fact that Dior still gives the wife-beater Johnny Depp a platform but cuts off ties with Bella Hadid & instead employs an is*eli despite everything that has happened this past month just tells you everything about that brand.” Another user wrote, “Boycott every brand under LVMH including Dior (if you have the money).” A third user thanked Dior for providing information about which company to boycott next, referring to them as a “genocidal company.”
