Congress leader Manish Tewari has expressed his support for Infosys chairman Narayana Murthy’s suggestion of a 70-hour work week. Tewari stated that many public representatives, including himself, already work 12-15 hours a day. Taking to Twitter, he questioned the controversy surrounding Murthy’s statement, asking what was wrong with it. Tewari believes that a 70-hour work week with one day off should become the norm in order for India to become a great power. He also suggested that taking 15 days of vacation in one year should be part of this work ethic.
Murthy’s comments on a 70-hour work week had sparked a debate last month. He argued that India’s work productivity is low compared to other countries and that improving productivity is essential for competition. Murthy cited examples of how countries like Germany and Japan increased productivity by having their citizens work extra hours after World War II.
It remains to be seen how others will respond to Tewari’s support for a 70-hour work week.
