I have always been a passionate traveler, but there was one aspect of exploration that I had never dared to try – solo traveling. The idea of setting out on my own, with no one to rely on but myself, used to fill me with fear. Every time I thought about it, countless questions would flood my mind. Where should I go? What should I do? Is it safe? Ensuring my safety was my top priority, and this fear often held me back. However, everything changed the day I decided to throw caution to the wind, put on my backpack, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. In this blog, I will recount my first solo travel experience and share my insights and advice to help you plan your own journey.
My first solo adventure came as a surprise, and it all started with my best friend’s wedding. Her wedding was taking place in the beautiful city of Puri, located in the heart of Odisha. Initially, I had only planned to attend the wedding and then return home. However, fate had other plans for me.
On the day I was supposed to leave, heavy rain caused the cancellation of my flight. With no other available flights for the next two days, I had to make a tough decision – wait around or embrace the unknown. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Those two unplanned days gave me an incredible opportunity for self-discovery, deepening my connection with myself and the world around me.
As I walked the streets of Puri, I felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. The unfamiliar surroundings, the enticing smells from street food stalls, and the curious looks from the locals all added to my sense of adventure. With no set itinerary and being alone, I felt a newfound sense of freedom. The rain, which had once seemed like an inconvenience, now added a mystique to the city. My journey had an unpredictable start, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that solo traveling was a catalyst for self-discovery like no other. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and into a world of limitless possibilities.
While exploring Bhubaneswar, one place stood out in the heart of this ancient city – the Lingraj temple. It is a masterpiece of Indian architecture, famous for its detailed design, perfect proportions, exquisite craftsmanship, and impressive size. The temple’s intricate carvings depict daily life activities, providing a vivid glimpse into history. It felt more than just a place of worship; it was a modern community center, offering insights into the lives of the people who built and frequented this sacred space.
Beyond the temple, the Bindusagar Lake, located in the north, added to the enchanting picture, providing a serene backdrop to this architectural wonder. As the day came to an end, I couldn’t resist the allure of watching the sunset at the Bindusagar Lake. It felt like a magical experience, a perfect conclusion to a day I had always yearned for.
Anticipation filled me as I approached Konark, with the sun rising over the ancient Sun Temple. This 13th-century architectural marvel, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a testament to the incredible craftsmanship of a bygone era. Shaped like a colossal chariot with twelve intricately carved wheels symbolizing the passage of time, the Konark Sun Temple is a living tribute to the artistry and devotion of its creators. While marveling at its beauty, I also embarked on a culinary journey through Odisha.
Odisha is not only a visual delight but also a gastronomic paradise. From comforting dishes that warm your stomach and heart to tantalizing your taste buds, my journey through Odisha’s culinary landscape was unforgettable. Whether it was savoring crispy kanji vada – lentil dumplings soaked in tangy mustard water – or enjoying spicy dahibara aloodum, or lentil dumplings served with yogurt and fiery potato curry, each bite was a burst of flavors. Odisha’s vibrant street food culture is not just about satisfying hunger; it’s a celebration of local flavors and an opportunity to connect with the people who create them. Whether you’re a foodie or simply immersing yourself in the experience, trying Odisha’s street food is a must.
Undoubtedly, my solo journey was exhilarating, but there were a few challenges that one must prepare for. First and foremost, ensuring a secure and comfortable stay requires scrutinizing hotel ratings and reviews before making bookings. For spontaneous bookings, it’s advisable to inspect the room before committing to it. Choosing reliable transportation is crucial for safety. Opting for government-operated services known for their reliability is a good practice. If you plan to use an autorickshaw or taxi, always confirm the fares upfront to avoid any unpleasant surprises. While maps are helpful, don’t solely rely on them. Engage with the locals for directions, as their insights often lead to valuable impromptu adventures and discoveries. While enjoying your newfound freedom, it’s important to keep your loved ones informed about your whereabouts for added security.
Always keep your phone charged, carry a reliable power bank, and manage your finances wisely. Carrying cash is essential, so never venture out without it. Dress appropriately for the weather and respect local customs for both comfort and cultural appreciation.
My exploration of Odisha and its historical treasures allowed me to connect with its rich heritage on a profound level. It was like a journey through time, where I could feel the echoes of ancient civilizations and understand the roots of our modern world. The vibrant colors and the energy of the place spoke to me in ways I had never expected. It served as a reminder that solo travel is not just about self-discovery; it’s also a way to discover the world and, in turn, unlock the depths of your own soul.
My unexpected solo journey in Odisha revealed a world of possibilities and self-discovery through travel. It reminded me that sometimes, the best experiences come when we step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown.
If you’re considering a solo trip, I encourage you to take that leap of faith and embark on a journey of self-discovery. You may just find, as I did, that the world is waiting to reveal its wonders to those who dare to explore it on their own.
