In recent elections, voters have shown a clear rejection of the right-wing “parental rights” movement, including the national group Moms for Liberty. This organization has gained attention for protesting various issues, such as critical race theory and books that touch on sexuality or gender identity.
Despite being labeled as an anti-government extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Moms for Liberty has faced criticism for disrupting school board meetings and making children feel unsafe. However, the organization remains committed to its cause, as stated in an internal memo that was obtained:
“Hey, fellow moms who oppose certain books! We understand that some of you may be disappointed with the election results, but we want to assure you that Moms for Liberty is more dedicated than ever to amplifying the voices of moms who want to enforce their rules on everyone else. We have faced losses due to the influence of liberal ideologies, but we believe that school board members should be chosen by us, the morally righteous ones.”
The memo goes on to mention specific election outcomes. In Iowa, where Moms for Liberty endorsed 13 school board candidates, only one candidate won. They attribute this to the injection of “Marxism juice” into the corn crops. In central Ohio, two out of ten candidates supported by the organization were successful. Moms for Liberty celebrates this as a victory, dismissing the importance of math.
However, there were also losses for the organization. In Pennsylvania’s Central Bucks School District, Democrats gained control by receiving more votes than Moms for Liberty’s recommended candidates. In Virginia’s Loudoun County, three out of four candidates supported by the organization were unsuccessful.
Critics have pointed out that focusing solely on issues like critical race theory did not lead to success in these races. Nonetheless, Moms for Liberty remains defiant and encourages its members to continue their efforts. They urge members to scrutinize books in school libraries for content related to sex, sexuality, race, and even anthropomorphized animals showing any form of same-sex attraction.
The organization also advises against attributing quotes from well-known fascists and mass murderers, after a previous incident caused controversy. Furthermore, they encourage members to deny the rights of LGBTQ+ children while claiming to uphold moral beliefs and reject the concept of hypocrisy.
