The armed wing of Hamas, known as al-Qassam Brigades, has announced its readiness to release 70 Israeli hostages in exchange for a five-day truce in Gaza. The hostages, primarily women and children, were taken during Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, where approximately 240 individuals were captured. Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson for al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed that negotiations have been held with Qatari mediators, who had previously assisted in the release of four hostages. The proposed truce aims to achieve a complete ceasefire and allow for aid and humanitarian relief throughout the Gaza Strip. Hamas has demanded the release of 200 Palestinian children and 75 women detained by Israel as part of the agreement. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and a representative for Hamas in Qatar have yet to respond to requests for comment. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to reach a deal, Hamas remains committed to securing the release of the hostages, accusing Israel of delaying and avoiding an agreement. The latest negotiations occur amid a rising death toll in Gaza, with the local health ministry reporting over 11,000 casualties.
