Prosecutors: Suburban Man Violently Breaks Into Random Woman’s Apartment, Slams Her Head Against Cabinet

DuPAGE COUNTY, Ill. – Pre-trial release has been denied for Abelardo Zapa, a 33-year-old man from unincorporated Willowbrook, who is accused of breaking into an apartment and assaulting a woman on Monday morning. Zapa faces charges of home invasion, robbery of a victim over 60 years old, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a victim over 60 years old.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:03 a.m. when Willowbrook police officers responded to a call regarding a man breaking into the victim’s home. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, who is over 60 years old, with visible red marks and blood on her face. She was later transported to a nearby hospital where she received eight stitches on her head.

Further investigation revealed that Zapa had been seen at the apartment complex with another tenant prior to the incident. He allegedly kicked in the victim’s door and attacked her upon entering. In addition to striking her in the face, Zapa also slammed her head against a cabinet and took her cell phone before fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, the victim was able to call 911 from another phone. Zapa was apprehended without incident shortly afterward at a nearby McDonald’s, located about a block away from the scene of the crime.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin expressed his shock at the senseless nature of the attack, stating, “The allegations that for no apparent reason, Mr. Zapata kicked in the front door of an innocent woman’s apartment and then severely beat her are shocking. A person’s home is their sanctuary and people have every right to feel safe in their homes. Mr. Zapata’s alleged actions destroyed this victim’s feeling of safety and security.” Berlin also wished the victim a speedy recovery from her physical injuries and offered support as she copes with the psychological harm allegedly caused by Zapa.

Zapa’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 11.
