Narayana Murthy Advocates Optimal Investment in Teacher Training for India

Software icon N R Narayana Murthy has proposed that India should spend $1 billion annually to train school teachers in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). He suggests that 10,000 retired highly accomplished teachers from the developed world and India should be invited to create “Train the Teacher” colleges in all of India’s states and union territories. This training program would be year-long and would aim to train 250,000 primary school teachers and 250,000 secondary school teachers each year. Murthy believes that paying retired teachers $100,000 a year for their services would not be a financial burden for a nation targeting a GDP of $5 trillion. He emphasizes the importance of investing in education and research to progress from stage one to stage four in the invention and innovation lifecycle of a nation. Murthy also calls for improvements in the quality of education in India’s institutions and the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020. He believes that a culture of high aspiration, hard work, and a willingness to learn from better-performing cultures is necessary for India’s progress.
