The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a ban on products with a halal tag, prohibiting their production, storage, distribution, and sale within the state. The ban does not apply to products manufactured for export. The government stated that the halal certification of food products creates confusion regarding their quality and is not supported by the Food Safety and Standards Act. The authorities responsible for checking food standards are the only ones allowed to determine the quality of food items. The ban comes after a police case was filed against a company and several organizations for allegedly providing forged halal certificates to boost sales. The accused entities include Halal India Private Limited Chennai, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust Delhi, and Halal Council of India Mumbai, among others. The complainant raised concerns over a conspiracy to decrease sales of products without a halal certificate, which is deemed illegal. The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust has denied the allegations and plans to take legal action to counter the misinformation. Halal certification is typically found on the labels of various food products, such as dairy products, bakery items, peppermint oil, and edible oils, indicating that they are prepared in accordance with Islamic law and are free from any prohibited components.
