The only privately owned island in San Francisco Bay, Red Rock Island, has been listed for sale for $25 million. This marks the first time the property has officially been available for sale, as it has been unofficially available before. The island, which spans roughly six acres, was first inhabited by Russian fur traders in the early 1800s and later became the residence of Selim Woodworth, a former California senator. The current seller, Brock Durning, is selling the island to cover the costs of caring for his aging mother. Red Rock Island can only be accessed by boat or helicopter and offers a sandy beach on the east side and a rockier shoreline on the south and west. The island has a rich history, including being used for mining manganese, which gives the soil its reddish color. The buyer of the island could either preserve it as it is or build something on it, although there is no electricity or drinking water. Solar panels and desalination systems could be used to provide power and water. The island is zoned differently in each of the three separate Bay Area counties it spans, which would require the owner to navigate the permitting process in each county. Various proposals for the island’s use have been considered over the years, including conservation efforts, hotel or residence development, and accommodating a Playboy Club.
