The U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson has arrived at the port in Busan, a city in South Korea, as a demonstration of extended deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, according to the South Korean navy. This arrival coincides with North Korea’s plan to launch a rocket carrying a space satellite between November 22 and December 1, aiming towards the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, as reported by Japan’s Coast Guard. This would be the third attempt by North Korea this year to put a spy satellite into orbit. Rear Admiral Kim Ji-hoon of South Korea stated that the presence of the Carl Vinson exhibits a “strong combined defense posture and a determined willingness to respond to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile threats” by the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
