An Al Jazeera engineer tragically lost 19 family members in the bombing of the largest refugee camp in Gaza during Israel’s ground battle against Hamas. Mohamed Abu Al-Qumsan, who works at the Gaza bureau, experienced the devastating loss of his father, brother, two sisters, and eight nephews and nieces, among other relatives, in the Israeli air raids on Jabalia camp. Al Jazeera condemned the incident as a “massacre” carried out by Israeli forces.
The report also mentioned that another Al Jazeera correspondent had lost his wife, son, daughter, and grandson in a separate Israeli air raid. Israel, determined to crush Hamas, claimed that the strike on Jabalia camp resulted in the deaths of 47 people, including a top Hamas commander involved in an attack on October 7, which prompted Israel to declare war against Hamas.
Palestinian authorities, on the other hand, stated that over 50 individuals had died in the refugee camp bombing. The explosion occurred just before nightfall in the densely populated Jabalia camp. Israel claimed that its warplanes had targeted a tunnel complex, killing several Hamas operatives, including commander Ibrahim Biari. However, Hamas denied the presence of any of its leaders at the camp.
An Israeli military spokesperson emphasized that Biari played a significant role in planning and executing the October 7 Hamas raids into Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people, mostly civilians. Additionally, Hamas is currently holding at least 230 hostages who were forcibly taken across the Gaza border from Israel.
