Celebrating the Tuba in Berlin

The tuba, a low-pitched brass instrument, is currently being learned by only 46 young individuals at music schools in Berlin. However, this low number is intended to change dramatically with the selection of the tuba as the “Instrument of the Year 2024”. Joe Chialo, the Culture Senator, recently expressed his desire to shift the tuba from its niche position and thrust it into the limelight. Joe Chialo, in his student years, had given the trombone a shot and had bravely taken on the challenge of blowing into a tuba during the unveiling of the “Instrument of the Year” program at the Musical Instrument Museum. This particular museum, located in close proximity to the Philharmonie, is home to the oldest preserved tuba in the world, a remarkable instrument crafted by the Moritz company in 1839.

Information and details on all the events related to the “Instrument of the Year” can be found on the website of the Berlin State Music Council. One such event is slated for March 22nd, where the Composers’ Orchestra Berlin will perform music pieces composed by tuba players Benni König, Matt Bookert, and Philipp Krüger at the “Schlot”. On March 31st, the Berlin State Youth Orchestra is set to present a tuba solo concert featuring the music of Edward Gregson at the RBB broadcasting hall. Furthermore, the espresso concert on April 3rd, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, will be dominated by the deep resonating sounds of the tuba.

From May 9th to 12th, the grand “Tuba Festival Berlin” will be held. The festival will see performances by the Melton Tuba Quartet at the Heilandskirche, Thusnelda-Allee on May 9th and by Sebastian Wagemann’s tuba class from the Eisler University of Music at the Coronation Coach Hall on May 10th. Additionally, there will be workshops and a tuba demonstration to promote musical education at the Brandenburg Gate…
