A Champion Narrates His Story

‘I am Varenne, the son of the wind’ is a film that captures the extraordinary life of a horse – a champion with unparalleled victories. The story is narrated by the renowned voice actor Luca Ward. The film encapsulates the magnificent world of a horse that reigned not just Italy, but the entire world. The production house Epiqa released this short film at Casa del Cinema in Rome. The film was produced by Masaf television station and can be watched on digital terrestrial channel 151, Sky channel 220 platforms, and tivùsat channel 51.

Behind The Scenes

Eugenio De Paoli, the Operation and Product Manager of Epiqa and the author of the documentary, commented that this film is a tribute to the heritage of horse racing. He expressed gratitude towards Varenne Futurity and Enzo Giordano for their collaboration, and Luca Ward for lending his voice to the champion horse.

The Champion Horse

Varenne, a horse with a dark tobacco-colored Baio coat and a distinct white spot between his eyes, earned the nickname ‘The Captain’ during his career. The film shares his journey from his first race in Bologna in April 1998 to his triumphant 2001 season, when he became the dominator of the world trotting.

The Journey

The film takes us on a nostalgic journey into the past through Varenne’s exploits and into the present where Varenne resides at the ‘Tenuta il Cigno’ in Villanterio. The film was shot at this location and was looked after by Daniela Zilli. The film will premiere on the television station on February 26 at 9.00 pm, with repeats on March 19, April 19, and May 19.

Reflections

After the screening, Giampaolo Minnucci, Varenne’s historic driver, shared his experiences and memories with the horse. Luca Ward also remarked on the uniqueness of narrating a horse’s story. Maria Chiara Polzelli, CEO of Epiqa, expressed pride in the final result. Fabio Schiavolin, CEO of Snaitech, emphasized the emotional connection that sports can create and expressed hope that the film would boost the trotting racecourse sector. Diego Nepi Molineris, CEO of Sport and Health, praised the film and expressed hope for the future of horse racing in Italy.

Special Appearances

The film’s presentation was graced by the presence of Zibi Boniek and Roma striker Serdar Azmoun. Azmoun, who owns 64 horses, shared his hope for the success of his horse in an upcoming race in Rome.
