Fact Check Quickly Disproves Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Controversial Book Claims

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has made controversial claims in her new book, “MTG,” according to excerpts that have been published and fact-checked by The Guardian. In the book, Greene alleges that no Democrats stayed to defend the House chamber during the U.S. Capitol riot. She mocks lawmakers for their “hysterical” behavior during the ordeal and specifically targets Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), criticizing him for not being able to run to safety quickly due to his age.

However, Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) has dismissed Greene’s claims as “patently false” and stated that she “doesn’t exist in the same reality as the rest of us.” Multiple accounts and photos of the January 6, 2021, insurrection from lawmakers contradict Greene’s assertion. Crow himself, along with around three dozen Democrats, was trapped in the House gallery for an hour after the violent mob breached the Capitol. Most other lawmakers had already been evacuated to safety.

Furthermore, other Democrats, including Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a former U.S. Marine, have been praised for their efforts in facilitating the evacuation and providing instructions on how to use gas masks, as directed by Capitol Police.

Greene also mocks Democrats for wearing gas masks and accuses them of being “hysterical” and unable to hear due to the plastic bags over their heads. She specifically targets Jerry Nadler, suggesting that his physical limitations prevented him from running to safety. It is worth noting that Greene has previously criticized President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for their age-related health issues, while remaining silent about former President Donald Trump’s age.

The Guardian reports that Greene’s book, set to be published next week, continues her familiar pattern of conspiracy theories and invective, targeting Democrats, the media, and even fellow Republican extremist Lauren Boebert with whom she has had a falling out.
