Gattuso Reportedly on the Verge of Being Sacked by Marseille

The tenure of Rino Gattuso as the driver of the team Marseille seems to be nearing its conclusion. The recent draw against Shakhtar in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs, followed by a defeat on the Brest pitch despite having numerical superiority, led to a decline in the team’s standing. They are currently in ninth place, a significant nine points away from the Champions League zone. This sequence of events appears to have prompted the club to consider a change.

A report from “L’Equipe” suggests that Gattuso – who took over in September following the resignation of Marcelino – has already bid farewell to his players and staff. It is speculated that Abardonado, who was already on the bench before Gattuso’s arrival, might return as an interim solution. However, OM’s dream replacement is Christophe Galtier, the former coach of Nice and PSG. Galtier, who has recently been cleared of discrimination charges, is currently coaching Al-Duhail in Qatar. If Galtier is not available before June, Marseille might consider alternatives such as Jean-Louis Gasset, who recently resigned as coach of the Ivory Coast team during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, or Sabri Lamouchi.

If Gattuso’s departure is confirmed, it will mark the fifth change of coach on the bench this season in Ligue 1. Lyon initiated the changes by replacing Grosso with Blanc, followed by changes in Marseille, Rennes (with Genesio making way for Stephan), Nantes (with Gourvennec replacing Aristouy), and then another round of changes in Lyon (with Sage taking over from Grosso) and OM.
