Giuseppe, Namesake of Prime Minister, Elected to Democratic Party in Sardinia

Giuseppe Meloni is a notable figure in Sardinian politics, serving as the president of the Democratic Party in the region. He shares his last name with the prime minister, a coincidence that often leads to playful confusion. In addition to this role, Meloni is also the outgoing regional councilor, a position that saw him confirmed with a substantial 6,751 votes, according to partial data. This political achievement took place in his home region of Gallura, where he previously held the mayoral position in the town of Loiri Porto San Paolo.

Despite his impressive electoral performance, Meloni’s vote tally was not the highest in the region. That honor went to his outgoing colleague from the M5S, Desirè Manca. Manca managed to secure over 8 thousand votes in his constituency in Sassari, outperforming Meloni’s count.

In an interview with ‘Un Giorno da Pecora’ on Rai Radio 1, Meloni expressed his happiness at his election victory. He described it as “double satisfaction”, deriving joy not only from his successful campaign but also from his shared surname with the prime minister. He humorously noted that the coincidence had led to some voters mistakenly crossing out the surname Meloni on the FdI symbol, only to write it next to the Pd symbol.

Meloni further elaborated on the amusing confusion, stating that he is perhaps more renowned in his area than the prime minister. He revealed that people often inquire if he is related to the prime minister. Despite this, Meloni clarified that the only commonality between them is their shared dedication to political service. He went on to highlight the geographical differences in their origins, with the prime minister hailing from southern Sardinia whereas he is a native of the northern part of the region.
