Hamas Militant Captured on Camera Planting Bomb on Israeli Merkava Tank

Hamas Releases Video Showing Attack on Israeli Tank

In a video released by Hamas on Thursday, a fighter is seen approaching an Israeli Merkava tank and placing an improvised explosive device (IED) on its hull. The fighter then retreats and fires a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) at the tank. It is unclear whether the explosion was caused by the IED or the projectile. The video also shows the fighter picking up a piece of metal, presumably from the tank.

Hamas claimed that the tank was destroyed, although there is no visual evidence of significant damage. It is possible that the Merkava’s Trophy active protection system intercepted the RPG before it hit the tank. The fate of the IED is also unknown.

This video highlights the vulnerability of armored vehicles when operating without infantry support. The Hamas fighter was able to approach the tank without being stopped and launch an attack. While other tanks are visible in the video, no Israeli infantry is seen. However, it is possible that they were present but not captured by the camera.

The video also underscores the challenges posed by tunnels, as previously discussed in a report on entering Gaza. Hamas has an extensive network of tunnels that it uses offensively and defensively. The complex and dense urban environment in Gaza makes it difficult for armor to maneuver and detect threats.

Israel has suffered casualties in its invasion of Gaza, with Hamas claiming responsibility for several attacks on Israeli armor. On Tuesday, a Namer armored personnel carrier was struck by a Hamas anti-tank guided missile, resulting in the deaths of 11 Israeli troops and injuries to four others. The Namer is a variant of the Merkava.

Given the nature of the conflict and the presence of tunnels, it is expected that Israel will continue to face challenges from Hamas fighters. Destroying these tunnels is a key objective of the invasion.
