New Speaker Mike Johnson breaks ranks, fully endorses Donald Trump, surpassing predecessor Kevin McCarthy

House Speaker Mike Johnson has officially endorsed Donald Trump for president, marking a symbolic departure from his predecessor. Johnson, a staunch ally and defender of the former president, expressed his wholehearted support for Trump in an interview on CNBC. He stated, “I’m all in for President Trump.”

Johnson, a relatively unknown congressman from Louisiana, assumed the role of speaker after Kevin McCarthy was ousted by a group of hard-right Republicans. Despite McCarthy’s long-standing alliance with Trump and his early endorsement of the former president after the January 6th Capitol insurrection, he had refrained from formally backing Trump’s third White House bid. McCarthy’s hesitation drew criticism from Trump’s supporters.

Trump has enthusiastically embraced Johnson’s rise to speaker, affectionately referring to him as “MAGA Mike Johnson.” However, the New York Times recently reported on a Facebook post from August 2015 in which Johnson criticized Trump, questioning his character and moral center. In response to a comment on the post, Johnson expressed concerns about Trump’s temperament and its potential implications for the role of Commander in Chief.

Despite his previous reservations, Johnson became a steadfast defender of Trump, particularly during his first impeachment in 2019 and throughout the 2020 election. He echoed some of Trump’s conspiracy theories regarding his loss to Joe Biden and even filed a brief in a lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 election results.

Johnson’s endorsement of Trump solidifies the notion that Trump is the Republican Party’s front-runner for the 2024 presidential race. Few GOP leaders are willing to challenge his dominance, leaving those who prefer an alternative candidate increasingly marginalized within the party.

While some more centrist conservative Republicans may be reluctant to support Trump, especially in congressional districts won by Biden in the previous election, they have limited options within the Republican Party to influence the outcome of the presidential nominating contest.

Overall, Johnson’s endorsement highlights the prevailing political reality that Trump holds significant sway within the Republican Party, making him the frontrunner for the 2024 presidential race.
