Nihang Sikh Opens Fire at Punjab Gurdwara, Killing Cop and Injuring 3

A police officer was killed and three others were injured in an incident at a gurdwara in Kapurthala, Punjab. The clash occurred between a group of Nihang Sikhs and the police over the ownership of the gurdwara. Authorities have arrested 10 people from the Nihang sect for allegedly encroaching on the premises, but the operation is still ongoing. One of the Nihangs opened fire at the police when they arrived to clear the area. The policemen were standing on the road when the attack took place, according to Kapurthala Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tejbir Singh Hundal. Senior officials have rushed to the scene, and a large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area. It has been reported that approximately 30 Nihangs are still inside the gurdwara. The Nihang sect is a group of Sikh warriors that dates back to the establishment of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. They are recognizable by their blue robes, adorned turbans, and often carry weapons such as swords and spears. In a previous incident in 2020, Nihang protesters had mutilated a police officer’s hand in Patiala during an attempt to enforce a Covid lockdown.
