A report from the American secret services, relayed by CNN and the BBC, reveals that Commander, a German shepherd owned by Joe Biden, had bitten members of the president’s security service at least 24 times. The dog, which was removed from the White House in October, had become a significant issue within the residence.
The documents, which are heavily redacted to protect the identities of Secret Service agents and their security procedures, reveal that the bite-related incidents occurred between October 2022 and July 2023. The agents suffered bites on various parts of their bodies, including the wrist, forearm, elbow, waist, chest, thigh, and shoulder.
These incidents impacted the surveillance of the president, as agents had to adjust their protection strategies and maintain a considerable distance from the dog. The documents do not record all incidents related to Commander, and only include those involving the Secret Service and not other White House or Camp David staff.
The Biden family were deeply upset by these developments. They apologized to those who were bitten and even brought flowers to some of them. The dog was eventually sent to live with other members of the Biden family.
Commander joined the Biden family as a puppy in December 2021, replacing their late German shepherd, Champ. Another one of their German shepherds, Major, was also relocated to Delaware after being involved in biting incidents at the White House.
