The United Nations sanctions against North Korea may be violated by a gift car.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has gifted a car to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for his “personal use”. This information was released by the North Korean news agency, KCNA and further confirmed by the Reuters news agency.
As per the Reuters news agency, this act of gifting may potentially violate the sanctions imposed by the United Nations against North Korea. It is also reported that Russia is a part of these sanctions against North Korea.
The car, which was manufactured in Russia, was received by Kim’s aides on Sunday as reported by the KCNA. Kim’s sister, Kim Yo-jong expressed gratitude towards Putin on behalf of Kim. She stated that this gift symbolises the “special relationship” shared by the two leaders.
It is known that Kim has a penchant for cars and possesses several luxury cars, which are believed to have been smuggled into North Korea. It is noteworthy that North Korea is currently under severe economic sanctions.
The camaraderie between Kim and Putin has strengthened since Kim’s visit to the Vostochnyi Cosmodrome, a space center situated in the Amur region of Russia, in September. The leaders agreed to deepen their cooperation “in all areas” during this meeting, as reported by Reuters.
It is also speculated that North Korea is supplying weapons to Russia, which is currently involved in a violent conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin, however, has neither confirmed nor denied the usage of North Korean weapons.
