Scott Pelley, host of “60 Minutes,” confronted John Eastman, one of Donald Trump’s alleged co-conspirators in the effort to overturn the 2020 election, in a recent interview. Eastman had claimed that voting machines were rigged in Georgia and that thousands of convicts and dead voters had submitted ballots to favor Joe Biden. However, these claims were debunked by Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger.
During the interview, Pelley called out Eastman for his false statements, pointing out that the investigation found only four convicts and four dead voters, not the thousands that Eastman had claimed. Eastman tried to defend himself by stating that the numbers were not quoted as exact amounts and that he had not seen Raffensperger’s data. However, Pelley quickly dismissed his argument, emphasizing that it was too late to adjust the numbers after Eastman had already testified to the legislature.
Pelley also questioned why, if there was so much evidence of fraud, no state had reported it and attempted to reverse the election results. Eastman responded by suggesting that there was a bias in favor of the “pro-government party” within government offices, making it difficult to investigate the evidence properly.
Pelley countered by stating that Georgia prosecutors had pursued further investigation, resulting in a grand jury indictment of 19 defendants, including the former president, on charges of conspiracy to overturn the election. Several lawyers involved in Trump’s claims have already reached plea deals, agreeing to testify against accomplices if necessary.
Eastman is also accused of being one of Trump’s henchmen who proposed that Vice President Mike Pence challenge the certification of votes. He defended himself by claiming that his only wrongdoing was providing bold legal advice to Trump. However, he faces possible disbarment in California and is charged with nine counts, including racketeering, in the Georgia case.
Overall, Pelley effectively challenged Eastman’s false claims and highlighted the legal consequences that he and others involved in the election conspiracy may face.
