Spotify Jam: Collaborate and Create Real-Time Playlists with Your Friends

Spotify has introduced a new feature called Jam, which allows users to create collaborative playlists where tracks can be added and played in real time. This feature is available to both Premium and Free users, although Free users need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to join a Jam. The feature is being rolled out to Spotify users starting from Tuesday and requires a Premium membership and the latest version of the mobile app.

Unlike regular playlists, any new tracks added after a user starts playing won’t be recognized. Spotify recently raised the price of its Premium membership by $1 and there are rumors of the company launching a lossless Supremium service in the near future.

To start a Jam, a user selects a playlist or song and taps the speaker icon or the “hamburger” button at the top, then chooses “Start a Jam.” Users on the same Wi-Fi network will receive a prompt to join the Jam when they open Spotify. Users can also add others to the Jam by enabling Bluetooth and tapping phones together, sharing the onscreen QR code, or sharing the link over a messaging app.

The host of the Jam has control over who is in the Jam and the songs in the queue. They can reorder or remove tracks, or enable “guest controls” to give everyone the ability to make changes.
