Tacoma Middle School Experiences 9 Lockdowns for ‘Kia Boyz’, Parents Express Exhaustion

Parents at Hilltop Heritage Middle School in Tacoma are expressing their frustration and concern after their children have been placed on lockdown multiple times. The self-proclaimed “Kia Boyz” are being blamed for these incidents. On Friday alone, there were two lockdowns at the school, bringing the total number of lockdowns this school year to nine. Tacoma Public Schools confirmed this information in a statement to KIRO 7.

Residents are particularly upset about the activities of the “Kia Boyz” who have been driving stolen cars on and around the school property, flashing weapons, and intimidating students. Sarah Meaden, a parent who lives near the school, stated that she constantly hears the sound of the “Kia Boyz” driving up and down the street. She learned about Friday’s lockdowns from her son, who texted her about the situation. A concerned parent even sent KIRO 7 a photo of a red Kia parked outside the school just before the lockdowns began.

The incidents involving the “Kia Boyz” have escalated to the point where they threatened a Tacoma Public Schools Patrol Officer with what appeared to be a firearm. They also voluntarily damaged their stolen Kia and proceeded to steal another vehicle, a Hyundai. Tacoma Police officers initiated a pursuit, but it was terminated due to concerns for public safety. Unfortunately, the suspects were not apprehended.

Jennifer Lacey, another parent, received a call from her child on Friday when the “Kia Boyz” almost ran over them and their father while they were trying to enter the school. Lacey decided to take matters into her own hands and immediately withdrew her child from the school. She, along with other parents, expressed frustration with the lack of communication from the school regarding these incidents. They are demanding a faster response and more transparency from the school administration.

In response to these concerns, Tacoma Public Schools explained that they do not typically send communication about modified lockdowns because they are precautionary measures for external situations not directly targeting the school. Instruction time is not affected, and students can move about freely within the building. However, entrance and exit to the building are restricted. The decision to cancel activities is based on various factors, including student behavior and safety concerns.

The parents at Hilltop Heritage Middle School are growing increasingly tired of the frequent lockdowns and the presence of the “Kia Boyz” on and around the school premises. They are urging the school district to take swift action to address these issues and ensure the safety and well-being of their children.
