Terrifying Storm Causes Cruise Ship to Abort Journey, Return to UK with Over 100 Injured Passengers

The cruise ship Spirit of Discovery, operated by Saga Cruises, was forced to return to the UK after approximately 100 passengers were injured in a severe storm during a 14-night cruise to the Canary Islands. While the injuries were minor, five individuals required medical treatment, according to the cruise company.

The incident occurred when the ship encountered bad weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. As the weather worsened, the Spirit of Discovery veered to the left, prompting the ship’s crew to activate the propulsion safety system. This sudden maneuver caused the vessel to come to a sudden halt and veer towards Portsmouth, where it ultimately headed due to safety concerns.

A spokesperson from Saga Cruises stated that most of the injuries were sustained during this maneuver. The ship remained stationary until the weather conditions improved and then returned to Portsmouth on Monday night.

The spokesperson emphasized that the ship was safe at all times and that the injured passengers received immediate medical attention from the onboard staff. They expressed sincere apologies to those affected by the incident and assured that the passengers were now on their way home in calmer seas.

It is currently unknown if any of the injured individuals will require further treatment ashore. Saga Cruises has not provided confirmation regarding this matter.
