Traffic in downtown L.A. disrupted indefinitely as fire beneath 10 Freeway leads to no signs of reopening

The 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles will remain closed indefinitely as the California Department of Transportation begins the process of repairing an overpass that was severely damaged by a fire over the weekend. The fire broke out early Saturday morning at two storage yards located in an area with multiple homeless encampments, resulting in the closure of both westbound and eastbound lanes of the busy freeway between Alameda Street and Santa Fe Avenue.

Officials held a news conference on Sunday to address the closure and its impact on traffic in the area. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass stated that there is no estimated timeline for reopening the freeway and emphasized the need for cooperation until the repairs are complete. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to expedite the repair work, acknowledging the significant traffic impact caused by the closure.

Before construction can begin, several steps must be taken, starting with an investigation into the cause of the fire. This investigation is expected to be completed by Monday morning. Hazardous materials mitigation is also necessary, followed by a detailed structural analysis of the damaged portions of the freeway. Engineers will inspect the columns and bridge deck to assess the extent of the damage.

Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes, avoid the area altogether, or use public transit to alleviate traffic congestion in downtown Los Angeles. The closure of the 10 Freeway is expected to increase traffic on adjacent freeways such as the 5, 110, and 710, where vehicles are being diverted.

The fire that caused the damage is believed to have originated from a nearby homeless encampment underneath the overpass. Governor Newsom stated that an investigation is underway to determine if anyone was living there at the time of the fire. While no deaths have been reported, some homeless individuals were evacuated and at least 16 have been provided with housing since the incident.

This incident may prompt officials to reevaluate the safety of homeless encampments near freeways throughout the city. The property where the fire occurred is owned by Caltrans and was leased to an entity that is now in arrears. The state is currently in litigation with the lessee, as it believes the space was subleased without permission.
