The Supreme Court, which has never previously commented or made a decision in a similar case, has agreed to fast-track the case in question. The Court will listen to both supporting and opposing arguments during the week of April 22.
The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to make a ruling in regards to the immunity of former US president, Donald Trump. This information has been reported by numerous US media outlets. The Court has decided to expedite the case, and it will hear arguments from both sides during the week of April 22. The justices, who currently consist of a conservative majority (6 to 3), will examine whether the legal proceedings against Trump, based on accusations of conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election, should move forward, or if he is entitled to any form of presidential immunity.
Up to this point, the Supreme Court has never made a ruling on a similar matter, specifically regarding whether a former president is immune from criminal liability for alleged illegal activities that were performed while in office. Recently, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia denied the former US president’s request for complete immunity, decreeing that he must stand trial to defend himself against accusations of conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, which were won by Joe Biden. The accusations also state that he committed a series of crimes with the intent of maintaining his position in office.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a separate case. This case questioned whether Trump had disqualified himself from running for a second term due to the 14th Amendment’s clause prohibiting insurrection, referencing the attack on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
