A 26-year-old Indian doctoral student, Aaditya Adlakha, was tragically shot and killed inside a car in the state of Ohio in the United States. The University of Cincinnati Medical School, where Adlakha was studying molecular and developmental biology, described the incident as sudden, tragic, and senseless. The shooting took place on November 9, when Cincinnati police found Adlakha shot inside a vehicle that had crashed into a wall on the upper deck of the Western Hills Viaduct.
According to reports, the ShotSpotter gunfire locator service detected gunfire in the area around 6:20 am. Drivers passing by noticed a vehicle with bullet holes and a person inside who had been shot, prompting them to call 911. Adlakha was immediately taken to the UC Medical Center in critical condition and sadly passed away two days later.
Andrew Filak, the Senior Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, expressed his condolences and praised Adlakha’s character and research. Filak described Adlakha as a beloved, intelligent, and humorous individual whose work focused on neuroimmune communication and its relation to pain and inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis.
Adlakha had come to Cincinnati from northern India to pursue his medical education. He had previously obtained a bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Ramjas College at the University of Delhi in 2018 and a master’s degree in physiology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi in 2020.
The investigation into Adlakha’s death is ongoing, and police have noted that his vehicle sustained multiple bullet hits, with at least three visible on the driver’s side window. The University of Cincinnati Medical School expressed its deepest condolences to Adlakha’s family and those who knew him as a friend and colleague.
