Mohammed Shami emerged as one of the standout performers for the Indian cricket team during their successful campaign in the Cricket World Cup. Despite not featuring in the initial matches, Shami made a strong impact once he got the opportunity. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps to his name.
What made Shami’s performance even more remarkable was the fact that he had to overcome several obstacles in his cricketing journey. Although he hails from Uttar Pradesh, Shami played at the domestic level for Bengal. In a recent interview on PUMA’s YouTube channel, he revealed the difficulties he faced during the selection trials for Uttar Pradesh.
According to Shami, his brother approached the chief selector during the trials, hoping to secure his selection. However, the selector shocked them with his response. He said, “If you can move my chair, the boy will be selected. Otherwise, sorry.” In defiance, Shami’s brother replied, “Forget moving the chair, I can turn it upside down. I have that much power.” However, they realized that capability and talent meant nothing in the selection process.
Disheartened by this experience, Shami and his brother decided to sever ties with Uttar Pradesh cricket. At the age of 14-15, Shami relocated to Calcutta and sought guidance from a coach. Determined to succeed, he honed his skills and gained valuable experience. After a few years, he joined the Arun Lal academy, where he encountered a surprising situation with a cement pitch and a short run-up. Despite these challenges, Shami persevered and continued to bowl.
During this time, Shami faced financial difficulties as well. He received an offer from a club, but they were not willing to pay him. The struggle persisted until one day, a club official gave him Rs 25,000, providing some much-needed support.
Shami’s journey is a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite facing rejection and adversity, he never gave up on his dream of representing India at the highest level. His success in the Cricket World Cup and his consistent performances for the national team are a testament to his talent and perseverance.
