A Punjab police officer has been suspended for a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state in January last year. The officer, Gurbinder Singh, who was serving as the Superintendent of Police (Operations) in Ferozepur at the time, has been suspended with immediate effect, according to an order from the Punjab Home Department. The security breach occurred on January 5, 2022, when the Prime Minister’s convoy was stranded on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur. As a result, Prime Minister Modi had to cancel all scheduled events, including a rally. The incident caused a major political controversy ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. The Director General of Police (DGP) submitted a report on the incident on October 18, 2023, stating that Singh did not fulfill his duty properly. Following a review by the competent authority, the decision to suspend Singh was made.
