Indian Equity Market Surpasses $4 Trillion Mark for the First Time

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), India’s leading stock exchange, achieved a significant milestone as the combined market valuation of all listed companies crossed the $4 trillion mark for the first time.

Boosted by positive sentiments in the equity market, the BSE Sensex, the benchmark index of the BSE, rose by 305.44 points to reach 66,479.64 in early trading. The market capitalization of BSE-listed companies reached INR 3,33,26,881.49 crore (approximately $4 trillion) at the exchange rate of 83.31.

So far this year, the BSE Sensex has surged by 5,540.52 points or 9.10%. Consequently, the market capitalization of all listed firms on the BSE has increased by about INR 50.81 lakh crore.

The BSE Sensex hit an all-time high of 67,927.23 on September 15 this year. Other markets with market capitalizations exceeding $4 trillion include the US, China, Japan, and Hong Kong.

Earlier, on May 24, 2021, the market capitalization of all listed companies on the BSE reached the $3 trillion mark.

The journey from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion took just over seven years, covering 2,566 days, on June 6, 2014. It then took 1,130 days to surpass the $2 trillion mark on July 10, 2017. Finally, the $2.5 trillion mark was achieved on December 16, 2020, after 1,255 days.
