Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim Receives Controversial Dismissal for Using Hand to Stop Ball in 2nd Test Against New Zealand

Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim suffered a rare dismissal during the second Test against New Zealand on Wednesday. Rahim, who usually uses his hands while standing around the stumps, was given out for handling the ball during an over from New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson. This marked the first time a player from Bangladesh has been dismissed in this manner. Rahim joins a select group of cricketers, including Mohinder Amarnath, Mohsin Khan, and Michael Vaughan, who have been dismissed for handling the ball.

Handling the ball dismissals are quite uncommon in international cricket, and Rahim became the 11th player to be sent back to the dressing room for this reason. Fans on social media were baffled by the fact that the ball was not even going to hit the stumps before Rahim intervened with his hands.

Rahim had scored 35 runs from 83 balls before his unusual dismissal. The decision was referred to the third umpire, who ultimately ruled in favor of the bowling team.

According to the rulebook, a batsman can be given out for handling the ball if they intentionally touch the ball with their hand or hands not holding the bat, unless they have the consent of a fielder. However, a batsman will not be given out if they handle the ball to avoid injury.

It is worth noting that the bowler does not receive credit for the dismissal in handling the ball cases.

Overall, Rahim’s dismissal for handling the ball adds a unique chapter to his cricketing career and highlights the rareness of this mode of dismissal.
