Doctor’s Brother Reveals Heartbreaking Tale of How Dowry Demand Crushed Her Spirit

Thiruvananthapuram: A tragic incident has unfolded in Kerala, where a young doctor named Shahana took her own life after her boyfriend called off their wedding due to dowry demands. Shahana’s brother, Jasim Nas, revealed that their family had initially opposed the marriage because of the dowry demands, but eventually agreed for Shahana’s happiness. However, things took a turn for the worse when Shahana’s boyfriend, Dr. Ruwais ES, insisted on receiving 150 gold sovereigns, a BMW car, and 15 acres of land as dowry.

Jasim explained that it was Ruwais who approached their family with the marriage proposal. In November, Jasim and his mother visited Ruwais’ family, where they were met with an adamant demand for dowry. Although Jasim expressed their willingness to give what they could, Ruwais’ family refused to negotiate. This turn of events deeply affected Shahana, who was emotionally shattered by the situation.

Jasim revealed that his sister had tried to move on from the failed relationship but struggled with the idea of working alongside Ruwais. Overwhelmed by her emotions, Shahana tragically overdosed on anesthesia, leaving behind a note that stated, “Everyone wants money only.”

In response to this heartbreaking incident, Ruwais has been arrested and charged with abetment to suicide, as well as under dowry prevention laws. The couple, Shahana and Ruwais, were both pursuing their postgraduation at Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram. Ruwais was known for his popularity as a student leader on campus and was involved in various medical associations. This incident follows the tragic death of another doctor, Vandana Das, who was stabbed on duty by a drug addict earlier this year.

Shahana’s brother expressed his sister’s admiration for Ruwais’ leadership qualities, which led her to believe that he was a good man. The state health minister, Veena George, has ordered an investigation into the matter, and Ruwais has been suspended by Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of dowry demands and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and families. It serves as a reminder of the urgent need to address and eradicate this harmful practice from society.
