President Gabriel Boric Stresses Contribution to Building Great Agreements

On Tuesday afternoon, President Gabriel Boric commented on the tragic passing of former president Sebastián Piñera, who died in a helicopter accident in the commune of Lago Ranco, Los Ríos Region. Boric praised Piñera’s contributions to the country, highlighting his democratic values and his commitment to the well-being of the nation. He cited examples such as Piñera’s leadership in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, his daring rescue of 33 miners from the San José mine, and his management of the pandemic during a time of global uncertainty.

Speaking on national television from La Moneda, President Boric expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of his predecessor. He addressed his condolences to Piñera’s daughters, family, close associates, and those who served in his two administrations, saying, “With profound sadness, I offer my condolences”.

The President also confirmed his directive for the former President Piñera to be honored with a state funeral and three days of national mourning, as a testament to his significant role as a two-time elected president of Chile. He announced, “I have ordered state funeral honors and three days of national mourning to pay tribute to the memory of the twice-elected president of Chile”.

Earlier, Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, reported on the incident involving the aircraft carrying the former president. She stated that there were three other crew members onboard, who were able to escape and reach safety. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the former Head of State.
