Disney Unveils First Images and Announces Sequel to Moana

Eight years have passed since the initial release of the first feature film, titled Vaiana in certain markets. This beloved film will finally receive a second opus, hitting theaters on November 27, as reported by Disney on social media on Wednesday. “Moana 2 will be released in November,” stated Bob Iger, the director of the Studio, during an interview on the American channel CNBC. A brief trailer for the project was also shared, providing a tantalizing glimpse into the sequel. According to a press release from Disney, the upcoming film will center around the new adventures of Moana, offering fans a fresh perspective on her journey.

“Called by her ancestors,” the Polynesian heroine – voiced in the original version by Auli’i Cravalho and in the French version by Cerise Calixte – will be venturing into the “distant seas of Oceania and into dangerous waters.” Accompanying her will be the demigod Maui, brought to life in the original version by Dwayne Johnson and in French by Anthony Kavanagh. These two will be accompanied by a “brand new crew of improbable sailors,” hinting at new characters and experiences in the upcoming film, according to the company’s press release.

The adventures of Moana were initially set to continue in the form of a series, exclusively for the Disney+ platform, as revealed by Bob Iger during his discussion on the CNBC channel. However, the American firm eventually decided to take a different path, opting for a feature film sequel instead.

The first movie, Vaiana, has managed to accumulate over a billion hours of viewing on Disney+ in 2023. Upon its release in French theaters in 2016, Vaiana managed to outperform Snow Queen in France, drawing in more than five million viewers. However, the film’s performance was somewhat more mixed in other parts of the world.
